Many people will tell you that there are spectacular destinations and adventures to be had while cruising. New people to meet. Many new experiences, and a whole ocean of things to see and do. World-wise cruisers, however, book their cruise based on one thing – the ship.
A lifelong cruiser will tell you that there are a number of secret, and often overlooked shipboard cruising experiences that they enjoy the most. Cruise consultants will tell you about them too, and we are quietly confident that you will love them… and they are not what you would expect!
Let me share a few world-wise secrets with you about cruising and the floating hotel you are about to embark upon..
In our opinion soem of the most overlooked cabins are the OCEANVIEW cabins. They are tucked away between the great value of an inside cabin and the perks of the pricier yet spacious balcony cabin. An inside will offer you minimum $$, with a minimum of space. The downside? No natural light. The balcony on the other hand may tip you over on budget, being more $$. Though it includes your own private outside area with fresh sea air and loads of natural light.
The OCEANVIEW, however, gives you the best of both worlds at a reasonable price.
Let’s take a sneaky peak… costs a tad more than an inside cabin, yet the cabin is larger. There’s loads of natural light from a fixed window, letting you take advantage of that lovely sea view – a bonus in anyone’s books!
Stay & Play Onboard
The fascination of a new port and destination is seemingly endless, always something to explore or see and do. And while we would never advise against skipping a destination, many old salts have been there and done that before… a number of times! It may also be that the weather is too hot, too cold, too wet, or you just don’t feel like a day on the town – you would prefer to relax instead.
Well, don’t despair. There is a somewhat unique opportunity on offer – to stay & play onboard!
While the majority of your shipmates simply vanish for the day. Imagine this. A whole entire ship all to yourself. No queues for the slides at the water park. You can take your pick of any number of deck chairs or cabanas. The whole spa is yours, as is the lovely pool. No kids. No noise. No fuss. And the atmosphere is one of relaxed cosiness as the crew go about their duties.
It’s your choice to do EVERYTHING or NOTHING AT ALL. Perfect.
For me? It’s Spa & Bar baby! The Spa will usually have super discounts on port days – massage, facial, mani/pedi… plus you are always first in line for a cocktail. Woop woop!
Fine Dining at its Best
Another dent in the hip pocket? Well no, actually. Every cruise ship offers a fine dining restaurant within your cruise fare. An elegant place to sit down and be waited on hand and foot, with the option to order as many portions as you like. And, remember, this is all at no added cost. SCORE!
What is this wondrous place you ask? It’s the Main Dining Room, of course. And every ship has one. No need for a trendy, à la carte over-the-top restaurant that will charge add-on fees. Unless, of course, there is an extra special occasion. Or it’s THE best steak/Asian/Italian restaurant afloat. Ot the inspiration of a Michelin-starred chef 3 times over – then don’t miss it! Oh, and there’s no need to lock yourself in to the all-you-can-eat buffet either… unless you have teenagers you need to fill in a hurry. Check out more with What’s Cooking at Sea
Classically cool, the main dining room offers a tempting selection of fare to suit all tastes, diets, families, couples or “just friends”. Feeling like three desserts tonight? No dramas. Or just needing a snack – try an appetiser as a main or a bowl of soup and a pud? Or are you after a proper sit down three course meal, served by a friendly waiter who will actually remember your name and drink preference?
Good food. Great company. Excellent service. All included in your cruise fare. Main Dining Room… what more can you ask for?
Go Your Own Way
Sometimes you just want to do it yourself and go your own way. Take a stroll through the town or markets. Laze the day away on that secluded beach you spotted last time you were here. Or find a restaurant or bar somewhere to use their free WiFi as you soak up the local flavour and meet more new friends.
How many times have you been on the same fully escorted shore excursion? And don’t get me wrong, because many ship’s organised tours are truly amazing, once in a lifetime opportunities and well worth the $$. But… let’s be honest … they’re highly organised, precisely scheduled, go go go, often without any wiggle room for you to do some exploring on your own.
One thing to remember though, if you do go your own way, is to be back onboard at least half an hour BEFORE the ship is due to depart. We cannot stress this enough. THE SHIP WILL NOT WAIT FOR YOU! If you are not back in time, then get ready to wave bye bye as she sails into the sunset.
Remember this one rule and any destination is all yours to explore.
Keep It Simple @ Sea
It’s time to use the KISS principle – Keep It Simple @ Sea
Trying to fit EVERYTHING in during a sea day can be quite hard work. Ziplines. Adventure Parks. Surf simulators. Jazz clubs. Ice skating. Skydiving. Sushi tasting. Virtual reality racing cars. Wine blending sessions. All of these and more are among the “must do” experiences potentially available to you, depending on your choice of ship. More options? Check out our blog Is it more than Bingo & Bubbles
When you Keep It Simple @ Sea, and as many returning cruisers will tell you, find a nook on the sun deck each day to snooze or simply gaze out at the open ocean. Relax. Do nothing but enjoy your sea voyage. Take time out to simply be. And even if you do jump into some or all of the activities on offer, be sure to stop from time to time to breathe in that rejuvenating, salty air.
