Earlier this month saw the debut of Viking Cruises Viking Sun in Australian waters on her maiden voyage around the world. Viking Sun is one of the cruiseline’s newest ocean-going small ship and joins Viking’s current fleet of 63 vessels, offering scenic cruising on rivers and oceans around the world. By 2022 Viking will add eight ocean-going cruise ships (carrying approx. 930 passengers each) becoming the world’s largest small-ship ocean cruise line.
Viking Cruises has been taking the world by storm on river and on sea. Well known for their vast fleet of luxury river cruises, Viking as recently as 2015, branched out into the ocean cruising market with huge success.
Recently, they have been widely recognised, with a long list of achievements for both river and luxury ocean categories of the Cruise Critics Editor’s Pick Awards, pointing to key differentiating factors for the brand. Awards included: Best for First-Timers, Best Enrichment, Best Shore Excursions, Best Spa and Best Value for Money. Viking was also name the #1 River Cruise Line by Condé Nast Traveler in the publication’s 2017 Readers’ Choice Awards.
“We have always been a travel company that focuses on exploration and cultural immersion,” said Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking. “In the last two decades we have led the industry in river cruising, and as we become the leading small ship ocean cruise line, we have an opportunity to introduce many new travellers to the Viking way of exploration.”
The Viking Difference is that itineraries are designed for discerning travellers with interests in science, history, culture and cuisine. Chairman Torstein Hagen often says Viking offers guests “the thinking person’s cruise” as an alternative to mainstream cruises. Ships are small to get guests closer to their destination, with more time in port and more overnights.
Viking Cruises is the cruiseline for grownups. It’s a cruise without distractions. It truly is an adults-only cruiseline – no kids club (strictly no under 18’s allowed), screaming waterslides, cheezy umbrella cocktails (unless you want one), and to keep the relaxing cruise ambience going – no formal dinners, no casino or ship’s photographer. After all, for the length of your voyage, this is your home at sea (or river).
Onboard, guests find serene Scandinavian spaces, where every room is beautiful and functional, quiet and filled with light. All-veranda ships mean that guests experience every day with a new, expansive vista.
With the most al fresco dining at sea, featuring regional cuisines and always-available international classics, Viking’s guests can truly dine in their destination. There is a definite focus on cultural enrichment brings immersive experiences onshore and onboard. And only The Viking Way brings guests itineraries that feature Local Life, Working World and Privileged Access experiences.
In addition, Viking Inclusive Value provides an inclusive small ship experience, with every cruise fare including an exterior verandah stateroom, a complimentary shore excursion in each port of call, all onboard meals, and all port charges and government taxes.
Guests will enjoy many of the complimentary amenities as part of their fare, including: beer and wine with lunch and dinner service; Wi-Fi; and coffee, tea and bottled water available 24 hours a day.
Viking’s ocean cruising guests also enjoy additional complimentary amenities, including: alternative restaurant dining, self-service laundry; access to the Thermal Suite in the LivNordic Spa; and 24-hour room service.
Viking Sun as Viking’s newest ocean-going small ship showcases The Viking Way in every respect, as do her sister-ship’s Viking Star, Viking Sea and Viking Sky. Coming soon to Viking Cruise’s ever expanding fleet are an additional 2 ocean vessels – Viking Orion & Viking Jupiter, plus another 7 new river ships which will add to the company’s most popular itineraries on the Rhine, Main and Danube Rivers, as well as Portugal’s Douro River … and, we expect, there are many more to come.
