So why Juneau? It has THE most amazing glacier – Mendenhall Glacier and helicopter rides, flight seeing trips, zip line above the trees, hiking, salmon bakes, bus trips and more are available for you to enjoy it.
My choice was a tour of the glacier which involved a short bus ride to the general area, a hike up a creek filled with salmon… I was a little daunted as we were told to just stand still if we saw a bear… And if it chose to stop to sniff you then drop to the ground in a foetal position and let it… Hmmm maybe I should have chosen the zip line safe high above the bears!?
We came upon the glacier all at once and it was truly spectacular. The shimmering lake before it reflected a mirror image of it, and small icebergs of white floated about. We sat and listened to nature. You could hear the ice creaking and cracking, the rustling of the breeze through the pine and spruce trees, the splashing creek with salmon leaping and eagles soaring above, just magic.
After about an hour we came up to the visitors centre before returning back to the ship. A late lunch before (a nap) I jumped in the spa and then a nice sit down for afternoon tea… Scones, jam cream, bikkies (sorry cookies) cakes and a nice cup of tea. A quick walk around the deck before more food… Maybe just a light dinner, soup and salad – too much food about.
